One week post surgery

A few notes about the week...

1.  I was stressed about finding a protein shake that I liked.  I need 40-60 grams each day...otherwise, my hair will begin falling out.  I am thankful my momma found great one for me.  Granted, it did not have a cheap price tag on it (of course) but in comparison to going bald...kinda worht it!

2.  When the directions say - mix with water on that golden shake, don't try anything fancy.  We added ice cubes to try to make a frosty drink - GROSS.  We heated it up to try to make hot chocolate - turned into this nasty pudding-ish stuff.  So...trial and error has proved all error and I am back to just drinking it plain...but at least I will have hair.  My dad wonders if he started drinking it if he would GROW hair.  I think it unlikely that his problem is lack of protein - you would too if you'd ever heard his order at Cracker Barrel!

3.  Went out yesterday.  Went to a few stores with Mom...totally rearranged the floor plan in the girls dept of one store with the electric wheelchair...but no one died and they didn't officially ask me to not return!  Good sign!  We even ate at Cracker Barrel.  Yes...the lady looked at me strangely when I asked for a cup of just the broth from vegetable soup.  It was so good though!  So much fun...but I overdid it...needing extra rest today!

4.  Itching means healing, right???  Please say right cause this is driving me crazy!

5.  Finally...frustrated...I am beyond words that I haven't lost a single pound since I entered the hospital.  Granted, the scales are on a different floor and I probably was full of tons of extra fluid during my stay, but really???  if you'd see what I am drinking....Can I ask for my money back???  I do think it will begin coming off now that I am moving around more and getting an adequate amount of protein.  At least I hope it will...

6.  TIme for meds and a nap...

Angie, I love EAS Myoplex Lite Shakes. I like the Chocolate Lovers Pack of shake mix. You can get is at AffordableSupplements.com or GNC. I think they have about 20 Grams of protein in each shake and taste great.

Itching is normal, and good.

Don't stress about the weight loss. You were pumped FULL of IV fluids and your body probably is just a little confused so it's holding on to everything not sure if you are going to feed it again. Rest assured, once you start moving and eating more than it will come off.

Don't get discouraged! I'm sure it will start falling off as soon as you are moving around more!

Itching is a good sign. Please don't stress yourself out about not losing weight. I've had a couple of friends go through the same thing recently and they didn't drop a pound for nearly a month. You have to remember, they really do pump you FULL of fluids during surgery and if you are drinking broth (which has a crazy high sodium level) you will retain more water and seem artificially heavier. Do take it easy and don't expect too much of yourself. Seriously, most people I know lose the weight really slow, but they do lose weight. it just takes time and it is healthier to lose it slowly.
